Project Overview

They say that art has the power to turn walls into windows, opening up spaces and transforming them into worlds of their own. For this art collector, that idea became reality. He envisioned three hand-painted murals that would make his home feel alive—one in the stairway and two on the rooftop. Each mural was carefully selected to blend the bold energy of Contemporary Pan-African Futurism with the edgy feel of urban-inspired design.

The result? An immersive experience in every corner. These murals weren’t just colourful additions; they brought his walls to life with rich colours, and profound meanings that invite anyone who sees them to pause and explore.

Concept Development

After browsing our Instagram collection, the client found himself drawn to murals that celebrated African culture with a modern, Pan-African futuristic twist—a perfect match for our ideology at Murals.ng. He wanted art that was both visually striking and deeply meaningful, capturing the essence of African heritage while embracing forward-thinking design. One standout choice was “Sisters of the Sun”, a piece from our new collection that symbolizes strength and beauty through feminine figures gazing towards the sky. This mural, selected for the rooftop, aligns perfectly with its open-air setting, creating a seamless connection between the figures’ upward gaze and the sky above.

The client also chose a second rooftop mural depicting a bustling African marketplace—a lively, colourful scene representing community and commerce. Together, these murals blend traditional African themes with bold, modern aesthetics, offering a rich, captivating visual experience that invites viewers to connect with the past and look toward the future.

Design Process

The project involved both virtual and in-person consultations, during which our team worked closely with the client to understand his aesthetic goals. One of the most critical aspects of the design process was ensuring that each artwork aligned with the architectural flow of the space while serving as a focal point in its respective area. The “Sisters of the Sun” art was not only selected for its vivid colour palette but also for the way it reflects upward aspirations, making it the ideal centerpiece for a rooftop location.

The stairway portrait posed a different challenge: it needed to be viewed from various angles as people ascended the stairs.

Colour played a significant role in the design choices across all murals. The mural in the stairway incorporates reds, yellows, and blues to create a captivating visual experience. Meanwhile, the rooftop mural’s colours range from golden oranges to soft sky blues, infusing the open-air environment with warmth, serenity, and optimism. The market scene painting on the rooftop uses darker, earthy tones with bright oranges used for the umbrellas, capturing the feel of a busy marketplace.

Execution and Installation

To bring the client’s vision to life, we dispatched our skilled painting team from Lagos to Abuja, equipped with all the materials needed to execute strikingly beautiful works of art. Prior to painting, they began with wall preparation, carefully screeding the surfaces to create a perfectly smooth, paint-ready foundation. This step ensured the murals would have both longevity and a flawless finish, critical for a project of this scale and detail.

The three murals were completed entirely by hand over the course of two weeks, meticulously timed to align with the final stages of the apartment renovation. The stairway portrait, designed for maximum visual impact, involved carefully layered colours and textures. Achieving the mural’s depth and abstract quality required precise brushwork and colour blending to build the layered, vertical strokes that would draw viewers’ eyes upwards as they moved through the stairway.

The first rooftop mural, “Sisters of the Sun”, was painted with a sense of connection to the open sky above. Using warm, golden tones blended with soft blues, the mural reflects the changing light from day to dusk, symbolizing unity, peace, and hope. Positioned in an open-air space, this piece brings a calm, uplifting energy to the rooftop, as the figures gaze upward toward the sky. The choice of colours and the natural lighting work together to create a focal point that’s both powerful and serene.

The second rooftop mural was the most intricate, featuring a detailed scene of a crowded Nigerian market. Our team carefully applied shades of blue, gray, and yellow to capture the hustle and bustle of a typical market day. This mural required extensive detailing to capture the liveliness of the scene, from the buildings to the individual people and goods scattered throughout.

Conclusion

This project successfully combined the artistic talents of Murals.ng with the unique vision of the client, transforming a private residence into a gallery-like space where art and architecture collaborate. The “Sisters of the Sun” artwork on the rooftop became the crown jewel of the project, providing a breathtaking and serene focal point. Each art not only contributed to the home’s aesthetic appeal but also added meaning to the space, offering a daily reminder of the power of colour and form. The client expressed great satisfaction with how the murals elevated the space, turning his home into a canvas that tells a vibrant, compelling story.
