    Ancestral Poise

A Heritage Mural for The Wheatbaker

    About the Project

Ancestral Poise is a signature work within The Wheatbaker's wider art programme. Created for a hospitality environment already known for restraint and cultural sophistication, the mural needed to carry Yoruba visual memory with enough presence to hold the architecture and enough composure to belong within it.

The work is built around figure, posture, pattern, and repetition. Individual identities remain visible, yet the composition reads first as a collective presence—a gathering of forms that connects contemporary hospitality with the continuity of ancestry.

Poise gives the figures their dignity. Repetition gives them the force of a lineage.

    The Cultural Idea

Ancestry is represented as presence rather than distant history.

The figures do not operate as illustrations of a fixed past. Their upright posture, repeated rhythm, and direct visual presence allow heritage to enter the hotel as something active and contemporary.

Yoruba visual references are carried through pattern, proportion, and the relationship between individuals within the group. The cultural reading emerges through the structure of the work rather than through a decorative border added around it.

    The Composition

The mural holds together from afar and opens slowly at close range.

At distance, the repeated figures create a strong architectural field. Their silhouettes and shared vertical rhythm allow the work to register across the room without becoming visually scattered.

Closer viewing reveals variation in gesture, clothing, surface, and expression. That change in scale rewards the slower pace of a hotel guest and gives the work enough depth to remain engaging beyond first contact.

    The Spatial Role

A cultural centrepiece brings gravity to the guest experience.

Within The Wheatbaker, Ancestral Poise operates as both artwork and atmosphere. It gives the surrounding space a recognisable visual anchor while remaining compatible with the hotel's calm architectural language.

The result is a moment of contemplation inside a commercial environment—an encounter that locates the guest within Lagos and within a deeper West African cultural continuum.

Ancestral Poise demonstrates how heritage can enter luxury hospitality with confidence and restraint: not as a theme, but as an authored cultural presence held within the architecture.
